Best Phone. Ever.

To call the iPhone the best phone Ive ever used is the biggest understatement of the decade, enthuses Michael DeAgonia (computerworld.com). Its like saying Jupiter is big, or infinity a long time. From the moment you pick it up, you can feel the weight and sturdiness of the phone, inspiring the sort of confidence you get from a quality build. The display is gorgeously integrated, the streamlined face covered by glass. Finally a design worthy of being called a design! iPhone is so good, in fact, that it even passed DeAgonias most critical test. Over the years, not a single device ever made it through my mothers hands without being returned to me with a frustrated laugh and a shrug. With the iPhone, once the screen lit up and my mother discovered that Swipe to Unlock really did mean swipe to unlock, she was sold.

Can Apple + AT&T Shut Down iPhone Unlockers?

aalobode writes "Do Apple and AT&T have the legal right to stop hackers from selling unlocked iPhones? Under their terms, only AT&T may sell iPhones, and Apple gets a commission. When unlocked iPhones are used on other providers' networks, AT&T and hence Apple get nothing beyond what they earned on the initial sale of the hardware. Can they prohibit unlocking? Reselling? The article in Businessweek gives the for and against arguments, but leans toward the view that the hackers may have the law on their side for once."

iPhone Freed From AT&T, Twice

A very large number of readers sent in stories about one or the other of the two new claims to have unlocked the iPhone for use on other GSM carriers. A New Jersey teenager, George Hotz, posted instructions for unlocking the iPhone using a soldering gun and a lot of patience. This is from coverage in a local NJ paper: "If someone handed him an iPhone new out of the box, he could modify it in 'about an hour,' he said. A person following his directions might take 'a good 12 hours,' the teen estimated." Hotz has put up a YouTube video substantiating his claim, and is conducting an eBay auction for one of his two hacked phones. The other hack is by a commercial outfit called iPhoneSIMfree.com, whose claim Engadget has verified. The company will be selling licenses to the hack, minimum quantity 500, at a price not yet announced. These hacks are much bigger news for those outside America. Expect to see an industry spring up to meet European (and Asian?) demand for freed iPhones.

The iPhone is the best phone you can buy

The iPhone makes me mad, proclaims Peter Svesson (AP Technology Writer). Not, mind you, at the iPhone itself, but mad at cell-phone manufacturers who have saddled us for years with interfaces that lure us into labyrinths of menus. Unlike cell phones with buttons that can mean Back on one screen, Cancel on another, [and] Exit on a third, iPhone has one button on its face. It always does the same thing: takes you to the top menu, where icons representing all functions of the phonemusic player, Internet browser and moreare laid out in a clear manner. Wham, youre out of the labyrinth. That, Svensson laments, is the way it always should have been done.

Like, for example, the iPhone. The iPhone takes over for the 80GB widescreen iPod with Video in the world of wonder. This hybrid device (yes, its a phone and an MP3 player) recalls the black monolith from 2001: A Space Odyssey. New iMac slimmer, sleeker, and significantly faster

What was arguably the best desktop computer on the market for the average consumer is slimmer, sleeker, and significantly faster, says Mike Wendland (Detroit Free Press) of the new models of the iMac. And perhaps best of all, he notes, the iMac is less expensiveby $200 to $300, depending on the model. Wendland touts the new display: Its glossy glass finish means colors generally look brighter and bolder than with the matte finish of the previous models. And he praises the new keyboard: The most revolutionary design associated with the new iMac is its super-slim aluminum keyboard. The keys are flat, not raised, much like on Apples MacBook notebooks, and the whole board is just a third of an inch thick. The keys are a tad bit wider than the old Apple keys, and very easy to type on.

Podcast Addiction

As one of my first posts, I thought I would share a little addiction I have. Ever since the release of iTunes 4.9, I have been absolutely hooked on podcasting. Most activities of my day lately are accompanied by one of my many subscribed podcasts.

In the morning, my iPod and my JBL OnTour speakers provide my shower/get dressed podcast. Next is typically another podcast via my iPod while I walk to class. I try to find an especially good one to help me take my mind off of the fact that Im even at school over the summer. I usually play my last podcast for the day straight out of my PowerBook while I check my email and such for the night.

One of my other secret passions is online gambling. the absolute best resource for finding online casinos is Hypercasinos.com, but anyway, this post was about podcasts, so I won’t go into deatil about that.

If you havent tried out podcasting yet, I highly recommend it. It puts you in control of what news you want to hear, and there are a lot of talented radio personalities behind many of these shows. This is a concept that is here to stay, and I am pretty excited about it.

New iMac and iLife 08: An improvement on an already stellar computer.

Its an improvement on an already stellar computer, says Katherine Boehret (The Wall Street Journal), referring to the new iMac. The keyboard is radical-looking. Its much flatter and sleeker than typical desktop PC keyboards. I found it easier to type with. Boehret goes on to explore iLife 08, I quickly picked up on how to use the new features in iPhoto and iMovie, thanks to unintimidating, self-explanatory icons. She continues, My video camera was instantly recognized when I plugged it into the iMac and in just about 15 minutes, I created a short movie. Boehret concludes, The new programs in iLife 08 are a pleasure to use, and the new iMac is a great way to experience them.

(I could have been up and running faster except that several office mates wanted to see the new keyboard.) Mingis concludes by saying that the iMac, along with the iLife 08 software, yields a fabulous combo that will make almost any user happy.

iPhone Bill a Whopping 52 Pages Long

PoliTech writes "iPhone bills are surprisingly large - 'Xbox Large', according to Ars technica: 'AT&T's iPhone bills are quite impressive in their own right. We're starting to get bills for the iPhone here at Ars, and while many of us have had smartphones for some time, we've never seen a bill like this. One of our bills is a whopping 52 pages long, and my own bill is 34 pages long. They're printed on both sides, too. What gives? The AT&T bill itemizes your data usage whenever you surf the Internet via EDGE, even if you're signed up for the unlimited data plan. AT&T also goes into an incredible amount of detail to tell you; well, almost nothing. For instance, I know that on July 27 at 3:21 p.m. I had some data use that, under the To/From heading, AT&T has helpfully listed as Data Transfer. The Type of file? Data. My total charge? $0.00. This mind-numbing detail goes on for 52 double-sided pages (for 104 printed pages!) with absolutely no variance except the size of the files.' You would think that a data company would have a more efficient billing process."

Chinese Pirates Copy iPhone, Make Improvements

An anonymous reader writes "Popular Science notes that manufacturers in China duplicate many well-know products. This includes the Apple iPhone, imitations of which are rolling off the assembly line already. That might actually be a good thing for some users, who might enjoy the user experience of China's own miniOne. 'It ran popular mobile software that the iPhone wouldn't. It worked with nearly every worldwide cellphone carrier, not just AT&T, and not only in the U.S. It promised to cost half as much as the iPhone and be available to 10 times as many consumers.' The cloned iPhone uses a Linux-based system. 'The cloners hire a team of between 20 and 40 engineers to begin decoding the circuit boards. At the same time, coders start to develop an operating system for the phone with a similar feature set. (The typical cloner either uses off-the-shelf code, writes something entirely new, or modifies a publicly available Linux-based system.)' Using the iPhone as an example, the PopSci site walks through the process of making imitation technology."
