AT&T Playing Hardball With Apple?

Ponca City, We Love You writes "There's some interesting speculation from Cringley on why AT&T chief executive Randall Stephenson let drop that a new version of Apple's iPhone will be introduced in 2008. The announcement is sure to cut into Apple's Christmas sales and could also cost ATT a million new customers and at least $1 billion in market cap, says Cringley. 'It is no coincidence that Stephenson made his remarks in Silicon Valley, rather than in San Antonio or New York,' says Cringley. 'He came to the turf of his 'partner' and delivered a message that will hurt Apple as much as AT&T, a message that says AT&T doesn't really need Apple despite the iPhone's success.' What may be troubling the relationship between AT&T and Apple is the upcoming auction for 700-MHz wireless spectrum and AT&T's discovery that Apple may be joining Google in bidding."

iPhone Dev Team to Open Source Free Unlock

An anonymous reader writes "In an effort to keep up with changes from Apple at a faster speed, the iPhone Dev Team is considering open sourcing AnySIM, the free unlocking solution for the iPhone. In a chat with Gizmodo, iPhone Dev Team member Sam said that this move could 'open a lot of possibilities for the future,' mainly in terms of the speed of the updates and avoiding sloppy and possibly dangerous binary patches. They are now looking for community input to get the project started."

Native Windows PE File Loading on OS X?

ozmanjusri writes "Coders working on Wine for Mac have found that the Mac loader has gained its own undocumented ability to load and understand Windows Portable Executable (PE) files. They found PE loading capabilities in Leopard that weren't there in Tiger. Further dissection showed that Apple is masking references to 'Win' and 'PE' in the dll, which means it's not an accidental inclusion. Is Apple planning native PE execution within OS X?"

Five stars to iWork 08

In giving iWork 08 a five-star rating, Neale Monks (macworld.co.uk) points out that the suite offers good value for the money, is easy to use, offers genuinely useful templates, exports to Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and integrates nicely with Mac OS X. Of the three applications that comprise iWork 08, Monks says that Keynote 08 thrashed PowerPoint back in 2003, and it just keeps getting better. He celebrates the fact that the new toolbars in Pages 08 are now chock full of new buttons and menus that show off its dramatically improved word-processing chops. And he suggests that Numbers, the newest member of the suite, may well redefine how people use spreadsheets. Its powerful, beautiful, and surprisingly versatile.
